Mitochondria 101: Mitochondrial Health and Disease

Mitochondria are key for health and longevity. The first question most people ask is, what is the best mitochondrial health diet?

What’s key for you to understand about your mitochondria is that unhealthy mitochondria create disease and healthy mitochondria create health and vitality

The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell and makes ATP, which is used as energy to power your body

ENERGY = LIFE and the more energy you make, the better you do, the longer you live, and the healthier you are

So what are the nutrients for mitochondria? They may not be what you think in the traditional sense of nutrition

Mitochondria use electrons, protons (H+), & O2 and create water, CO2 and ATP

There are 3 sources of electrons: food, sun, earth

All food is broken down into electrons and protons

Protons are H+ or hydrogen, and this is one reason molecular hydrogen can be a good hack for your health and performance

DHA converts sunlight to electrons. Seafood is the best source of DHA and this is why seafood is a staple of the mitochondriac diet and is an ideal source of nutrition for mitochondria

For those new to my site, a mitochondriac is one that knows faulty mitochondria are behind nearly every disease

Mitochondriacs create a lifestyle that optimizes mitochondrial function and this is why becoming a mitochondriac is one of the core skill sets that I teach my clients

Light is a critical nutrient for mitochondria and this light is meant to come from the sun. Life has been evolving on this planet for many millions of years and for a majority of that time the main light source life was exposed to was sunlight

Today, life is inundated with artificial man made light and this is having a major impact on healthy mitochondrial function

Light affects health and blue light & nnEMF create inflammation and decrease mitochondrial function

Poor mitochondrial function drives 85%-90% of disease

The key to reversing disease is to optimize mitochondrial function

How do you know if your mitochondria are healthy?

Simple Mitochondria Health Test

One of the things to look at on your blood labs are your CO2 levels. Remember, CO2 is one of the things that your mitochondria make so you want to be making lots of it

25 and higher is where you want your CO2 to be

What else do your mitochondria make? Water…and this water is different than the water you drink. The water your mitochondria make is metabolic water and this is also something we can test for using the BUN/Creatinine ratio

You want your BUN/Creatinine ratio to be at 10 or lower. The higher this ratio, the more dehydrated your cells. Drinking more water won’t necessarily fix this. You need to fix your mitochondria

If you don’t have them yet, get my Top 9 Biohacks to fix your mitochondria and keep them healthy

And what else do mitochondria make? ATP

ATP is the name of the game and when you’re healthy you make more than your own body weight in ATP each day

If you want to know how to boost your energy, if you want to know how to stay young, if you want to know how to stay healthy…you need to make more ATP

When you don’t make enough ATP you don’t have enough energy to do all you need to do and this is when symptoms and disease show up

Blue light & nnEMF (wireless radiation from cell phones, wifi, bluetooth; magnetic/electric fields from wiring &electronics) create inflammation and inflammation decreases mitochondrial function

The key to reversing disease is to optimize mitochondrial function and this is a core element of what I teach in the Optimal Health Protocol

KEY POINT: Mitochondrial Health and Disease

Poor mitochondrial function drives 85%-90% of disease. When your mitochondria are working well you make a lot of energy to meet the demands of being a high performer

When you have low energy, annoying symptoms, or chronic disease…it’s because you have poor mitochondrial function and you’re not making enough ATP

Fix your mitochondria and YOU get better

How Disease Happens…

Heteroplasmy is the mutation of your mitochondria. This is normal and happens as you age. When you’re healthy you repair damaged mitochondria that can be repaired and take out the rest. More on that in a future post

The interesting thing is you can have up to 70% mutated mitochondria and still maintain healthy cell function

This is how sickness can come out of nowhere. When you don’t live a healthy lifestyle you create more mutated than healthy mitochondria and over time you hit the 70% threshold and disease ensues

This is how I lost my health. 20+ years of excess drinking, up late, not enough sleep, too much time on computer / smartphone (chronic blue light)…and too little time outdoors

I was doing more things that destroyed my mitochondria than repaired and regenerated them and started getting more symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, poor digestion, anxiety, insomnia, and brain fog. It really sucked
When I changed my lifestyle…my mitochondria repaired & regenerated…my symptoms started going away…and vibrant health followed

To Summarize – a decrease in mitochondrial function = an increase in heteroplasmy = Aging, Symptoms, & Disease

High heteroplasmy in your heart = CVD; high heteroplasmy in your brain = neurodegeneration (AD, PD, autism), high heteroplasmy in your breast = breast cancer

Lack of energy production (ATP) is the single cause for all chronic disease

The key to reverse disease is to improve mitochondrial function

It really is that simple. Improve your mitochondrial function and your health and performance gets better
